Organized Living, The Easy (Stylish) Way

We know your life is busy! The last thing you need to get organized are complicated DIYs or "life hacks" you'll never do! Hive is ALL ABOUT simple solutions that work with how people actually live. (If you were at a recent Hive dinner party you would have seen us drying homemade pasta on the kitchen curtain rods!)

When you first enter your home you need a landing spot. This Entry we created for clients in Sherman Oaks was just featured in a story about organized living on Houzz.com. We love using a basket or a pretty tray to catch those little things you're always losing: keys, sunglasses, even cell phones. If it's easy to drop there you'll make a habit of it, and you'll never misplace those items again! Real life.

10 Decluttering Projects You Can Do in 15 Minutes or Less

Upstate NY Eco-Farmstay

Three years ago a close friend of Hive's moved away to Upstate New York to pursue her dream of running a farm. After much work mentoring with cheesemakers and pulling together funding her dream is finally coming true! Hive LA Home is THRILLED to help. We can't wait to put on our work boots and pour some elbow grease, love, and white paint into her 120-yr old farmhouse. As early as this Spring she'll be accepting guests to her Farmstay. See firsthand how to make goat cheese, hit the local racetracks, farmers' markets, or flea markets, take in the bucolic landscape, and oh yeah, PLAY WITH BABY GOATS.

Moody and Romantic Master Bedroom Design Plan

Preparing a Design Plan for our clients is one of the most creative parts of the job!  Once we meet with our client and discuss what their needs are, we build the floor plan to ensure that we are scaling the proper sized furniture.  Next, we head over to Pinterest and start pinning inspiration and furniture pieces for the space.  Once we have narrowed down pins and choose our favorite selections, we create a design plan.  This is a map of where and what paint, furniture, fabrics, pillows, lamps, and rugs will be placed in the room.  Our top picks are not always the client's, but thanks to our extensive research we can easily go back to other selections we pinned.

Below are the final selections for our latest project.  Can't wait to share pictures of this one!

Holding True to Your Inspiration

Putting together a room can be a daunting task. It's easy to become overwhelmed by inspiration from Instagram, Pinterest, not to mention all the product that we have available at the click of a button (late night Google searches, anyone?).

Whenever Hive LA Home begins a new project we speak to our clients in their home or office to get a real sense of how they want to use the space. While brainstorming, we like to have one major presiding theme: a feeling, an inspirational individual, or a place, that will help inform all the choices along the way, but never overpower.

For our latest project, a Master Bedroom in Sherman Oaks, we are inspired by the the worn-in luxury of Morocco. Keeping in line with our clients' neutral, minimal style, while adding a touch of drama with hanging pendants, we bring in lots of faded natural wood tones and linen textures that hint at a sultry desert escape.

The Art of Art Walls

Family photos are a great way to turn a house into a home.  Mixing photos from your family's past and present, maps from where your ancestors came from, your child's first hand-print, and art from your five year old all make the perfect pieces for your composition.

How do you create this personal historical masterpiece?  Once you have selected the pieces, make a list of dimensions and then hit the flea markets or Aaron Brothers for frames. Hive likes mixing all different finishes and sizes of frames which add interest, while using the same color and size of matting to create uniformity (for the smaller pictures no matting is necessary).  Next, layout all of your frames on the floor and try to vary the sizes and frame styles.  Finally, get hanging and don't forget your level!  We found it helpful to start at one end of the staircase and work up, keeping spacing consistent between the frames.  We also added velcro tape to the backs of the frames to hold the pieces in place.  Check out the before and after shots below.

Mod Dining Set Gets a New Look

Hive LA Home scored this amazing 1960s dining set at a local flea market that was in need of some new upholstery. For our client, a local chef and man-about-town, we wanted a bright but handsome fabric that would complement the blonde stain and hold up to entertaining. A vibrant blue cotton velvet did the trick. We can't wait to be invited for dinner!

Foxhill Lane

Styling bookshelves can be overwhelming for anyone, even designers!  Hive LA Home put the finishing touches on this beautiful home in Perrysburg, Ohio (yes, we travel).  Here are a few tips to make your bookshelves look effortlessly pulled together:

Negative space is important, don't overload with too many accessories as it tends to look too contrived.

Art books, art books, and more art books!  Find a used bookstore and scour the shelves for your favorite spines in all different sizes.

Sprinkle one or two collections throughout the shelves for a cohesive look.  We used the clients' blue and white porcelain for a timeless pop of color.

Genesee Ave.

Over the course of one afternoon Hive LA Home updated a West Hollywood one bedroom. Choosing what to keep and what to sell de-cluttered the space and we hung artwork to tie the look together. Sometimes it just takes fresh eyes to see your pieces in a new light.

Kings Road

Hive LA Home transformed an unfinished master bedroom into an elegant sanctuary inspired by the couple's favorite hotel in Palm Springs.

10th Street

For a Texas-born bachelor Hive LA Home created a handsome and rustic living space perfect for poker night or (fingers crossed) date night. Masculine materials like rough spun linen and leather mix well with the custom redwood dining table and scaffolding bar. He wasn't single for long.
